Sir Jonathan Moyle (JM) welcomes you to the UATL® Patent Department.
Sir Jonathan Moyle has led the Patent Department since 2016. He brings 26 years of experience as a Senior Examiner and leading expert at the European Patent Office (The Hague, NL), and the department delivers intellectual property protection — trademarks, patenting and licensing — at the highest professional level.
Filing patents is a common and logical strategy for protecting intellectual property and technologies. It increases both short-term and long-term valuations and is unmatched as a foundation for commercialisation — from royalties to the licensing of patents. In the final stages of commercialisation, a strategic patent portfolio — including granted patents with significant coverage of the core products or services — typically increases value and makes intellectual property more useful and more profitable.
Three patenting strategies
- Offensive patent filing strategy. The purpose of an offensive strategy is to block competitors from using your proprietary technologies and to generate royalties by enforcing patent rights. It means filing patents covering all reasonable inventions as early as possible.
- Defensive patent filing strategy. When filing defensively, a company patents its innovations to ensure it can keep using them — without the risk of competitors patenting the same technology and restricting its rights to the invention.
- Defensive publication / disclosure. Defensive publication of a new technology prevents third parties from obtaining a patent on it: a description and/or drawing of the product, apparatus or method is disclosed so that it enters the public domain.
Patent advantages
- Patents provide licensing revenue.
- Patents provide leverage for co-licensing deals when partnering, both before and after patenting.
- Patents prevent competitors from using your inventions when you enforce your rights.
- Patents protect an area of research while you identify a product.
- Patents are corporate assets that add value.
